Unconscious bias workshop: understanding assumptions that influence decision-making

Unconscious bias workshop: understanding assumptions that influence decision-making - 02/11/2021 10:00am

Time: 10:00am - 12:30pm

Venue: Online workshop

This workshop will help look at assumptions we make that can drive organisational decisions – often referred to as “unconscious bias”. If we do not recognise that we have these unconscious assumptions, we may remain unaware of how attitudes and stereotypes exclude groups or encourage involvement of a particular group. The purpose of the workshop is to review unconscious bias to develop fresh ideas on equality and organisational change. In this non-judgemental session we will look at:

• what we mean by “normal”

• power and the meaning of privilege

• culture, assumptions and organisational discrimination

• tackling unconscious bias to build equality, diversity and inclusion

The workshop will be interactive, through group discussion and reflection. Participants will be encouraged to use their reflection and learning to develop an action plan There will be a short break

The trainer will be Ila Chandavarkar.  Ila has substantial management and work experience in the voluntary and public sectors. She is a consultant and trainer whose previous roles include Head of Policy at the national Women’s Resource Centre, Chief Officer at MENTER, an East of England race equality network, and Voluntary Sector Support Manager at Cambridge City Council. Examples of previous training are cultural awareness for social workers and similar professionals, equality impact assessments and a series of workshops for the University of Cambridge on identity, empathy and resilience following the EU referendum. Ila has a strong commitment to promoting equality and is currently working with Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum. This training is part of a range of equality, diversity and inclusion training and advice from CECF.
